Share! Calling ALL Natives: to Converge on the State Capitol at Helena, Montana on September 14 to insist that our most invisible populations are counted in the 2020 US Census to the FULL-depth of Native identity.
We need YOUR presence throughout the day, Sept 14.
The Department of Corrections denied Native people the equal right to write-in tribal name(s) and affiliations for purposes of Census data collection. Native people are overrepresented in MT’s criminal justice system, accounting for nearly 30% of the overall population.

Not having accurate census representation incl. tribe name hurts Montana TRIBES.

First, on April 28, 2020 the Dept of Corrections e-submitted Group Quarters data that was absent of all tribe name identifiers. Then, the DOC resubmitted more inadequate race data on a very limited segment of the inmate population that did not allow for multiple tribes to be listed. This fragmented data was never intended for purposes of the Census and did not uniformly give incarcerated persons (Natives) the opportunity to declare tribe.

MONTANA Corrections must give all people in their custodyaccess to the official paper Census forms so that thousands may identify WHO they are for themselves. Federal and State agencies may NOT decide for us what race(s) we are nor do they have the authority to deem anyone a “faceless Indian”, by indicating that individuals are generally Native American.

Every human that resides in within the boundaries of the United States has the right to be counted according to the full-depth of their race. We must be able to declare tribal affiliation and more than one tribe name, if appropriate. Government agencies are not working with tribes or individuals to ensure an equal and complete census count.

Please join us in being a good ancestor and stand up for the human and civil rights of those who are unable to represent the interests and strengths of our great Tribal Nations.

Drums welcome. Hand drums too. All day community event. Wear a mask. Calling all nations to stand up for the rights of our incarcerated people to be counted as for humans in the census. If all lives really mattered… Then we got a protect our whole community! Thank you relatives. Hope to see you there.
