Community change occurs in many ways, and one way Red Circle Project is changing the face of HIV/AIDS is by bringing many minority groups together by hosting an annual pow wow. For the past seven years, RCP has hosted “Celebrating All Life & Creation” Pow Wow in the City of West Hollywood at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90046. With the gracious support of City Hall, the powwows have been very successful and success is measured not only by the turn out—approximately 500 people—but by the diversity of people in attendance. Although RCP is funded to provide services specifically to AI/AN LGBT individuals, they come into contact with broader communities of different ethnicities and are given the opportunity to educate on HIV as well as culture. The presence of a diverse community at the powwow enhances the experience of all those in attendance.
Everything about a powwow is traditional. The selection of songs performed, the head staff, and especially the head man and head woman dancer, come from a long line of traditions. Each and every person’s presence adds to the power of the healing process. The gathering of so many diverse individuals in one place and sharing energy adds to the process. In regards to HIV/AIDS education, the diverse attendees will also have an opportunity to have free HIV testing and STI screening which will be made available from JWCH’s (John Wesley Community Health) mobile testing unit that will be on site. There will also be other local organizations providing outreach to disseminate information that will aide in healthy community awareness. With several nonprofit organizations present, there will be information available for all walks of life.
