Our pow wow takes place outdoors on the gymnasium field at Oxnard College. The college is just a few blocks form the Pacifica Ocean, so temperatures are usually mild with high relative humidity. All pow wow drums and dancers are welcome. The public is welcome. We provide about 100 seats on the arena, under canopies, for the visiting public. It’s a friendly, family oriented gathering which was first held on a horse ranch in the summer of 1994. The pow wow proper begins Saturday, June 8. On June 7, vendors are welcome to set up any time after 12 pm. Friday evening is not typically a great evening for sales, but coming on Friday does allow vendors time to relax, set up at a leisurely pace, and catch up with friends. Friday evening beginning at 6 PM we have a one flute circle. Everyone, regardless of heritage, is welcome to take the microphone, from professional to beginner. All wind instruments are welcome. Hand drums and hand drums groups are welcome.
The pow wow proper begins Saturday at 11 AM with open gourd dance. Hale and Company is our gourd and host southern drum. David Patterson is our head gourd dancer.
Somewhere right around noon NDN time is Grand Entry. When the first call for grand entry goes out, if you are a grass dancer, step out where Victor Chavez, our arena director, can see you. Whenever possible, we like to ask the grass dancers to make the way good for us before all the dancers enter the arena, and give you an appropriate song to do so.
We’re super happy this year to have the honor of a full head staff…head man, head woman, head round man, head young woman, head boy and head girl. We’re also very excited that half of our head staff are honoring us with accepting that position for the first time.
There will be intertribal and exhibition dances throughout the day, including some head staff specials in the jingle and northern traditional style. We will take a break for dinner somewhere between 4 and 5 PM, and wind the powwow down around 7 PM. There are no lights on the gymnasium field.
Sunday’s schedule begins with gourd dancing at 11 AM and at some point within the gourd dance, we will have a Veteran’s honoring. All Veterans, regardless of nationality or branch of service, are welcome to take part.
No drugs, alcohol, firearms or fireworks are allowed. Additionally, Oxnard College is a smoke free campus. Free admission, free parking on campus. The Chidren of Many Color Intertribal Powwow is hosted by Redbird, a 501(c)(3) Native American and environmental non profit association. You can learn more about Redbird at www.RedbirdsVisions.org
