SMSC Annual Wacipi (2019)
August 16, 2019 - August 18, 2019
Pow Wow Information
Wacipi—or Pow Wow—is a traditional Native American gathering. It is a time for renewing friendships and making new ones, dancing, singing, and celebrating. Join the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) for its annual Wacipi in Shakopee, Minnesota, over the weekend of August 16-18, 2019. At Wacipi, there are multiple Grand Entries throughout the three-day event, which includes a ceremonious entrance of a Native American veteran color guard, visiting dignitaries, and tribal royalty into the dance arena, followed by hundreds of dancers.
Representing dozens of tribes from across North America, dancers will compete in various dance styles and age groups, while drum groups and singers provide a steady pulse and a peek into the rich heritage of Native American culture. Artists, crafters, and merchants will surround the dance arena, showcasing traditional beadwork and jewelry, handmade goods, and authentic foods.
Get a glimpse of the weekend performances on August 15 at the SMSC’s Wacipi Exhibition, held annually at the Mall of America Rotunda. The culture, fun, and fellowship will continue into the weekend at the SMSC Wacipi Grounds, located at 2975 Dakotah Parkway in Shakopee, just southwest of the Twin Cities.
